from scrap to power: project to rebuild pcs in brazil
Introduction: My Experience
My old PC no longer works — it has served its purpose. I am replacing it with a newer model, but it made me think: who really benefits from the technology we consume, and who bears the true costs?
1️⃣ Local Context: Brazil and PC Reuse
- Brazil produces significant amounts of electronic waste each year, but access to functional technology for the community is limited.
- Recycling programs often focus on extracting valuable metals rather than refurbishing equipment for local use.
- This project aims to rebuild and upgrade PCs, giving functional technology directly to those who need it in the community.
2️⃣ From Scrap to Power
Old and discarded PCs can be transformed into working machines with upgrades and maintenance. By salvaging parts, replacing broken components, and optimizing software, a community project can:
- Provide computers for education and work
- Reduce electronic waste in landfills
- Promote technology literacy and sustainability
3️⃣ Challenges and Realities
4️⃣ Impact on the Community
- Access to functional PCs for students and low-income families
- Reduced electronic waste and environmental impact
- Opportunities for volunteers to learn about PC maintenance and upgrades

Conclusion
This project demonstrates that old PCs are not just scrap — they are a chance to empower communities, reduce waste, and provide technology access where it’s needed most. By focusing on reuse and local impact, we can turn discarded machines into powerful tools for education and growth.
